The Centre for Conflict Studies of Marburg University and the City of Marburg are organising, as part of the "Marburg City Dialogue" and well fitting in the context of May being Europe Month, a lecture by Prof. Dr Thania Paffenholz (Inclusive Peace) on "What Can and Should Peace Research Do?"
Event Details:
- 19 May 2025, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM
- Historic Town Hall, Marburg
This lecture explores the role of peace research in a time of profound uncertainty, polarisation, and geopolitical upheaval – a reality that affects us all. Dr Paffenholz will provide a critical overview of the current state of the world, analyse the implications for Germany and Europe, and examine how these developments are perceived in other parts of the world.
Prof. Dr Thania Paffenholz is an award-winning peace researcher and international mediator. Her work has had a significant impact on both academic scholarship and practical peacebuilding. She has collaborated with armed groups, governments, and civil society actors in more than 20 peace processes – including in Ukraine, Colombia, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and Sudan – to help find pathways out of violence. Dr Paffenholz is also the founder of Inclusive Peace, a Geneva-based think-and-do tank.
For over twenty years, the Centre for Conflict Studies at Marburg University has organised the lecture series “Conflicts in the Present and Future.” The lectures address topics such as war and peace, violence and racism, social movements and the climate crisis, or inequality and poverty.
This semester's theme is “Science and Society: Symbioses, Conflicts, Potential.” The series is aimed at the general public in Marburg, with a focus on current issues that are also relevant to the city. To that end, the Centre for Conflict Studies and the City of Marburg have established a cooperation. The summer term 2025 programme is organised and moderated by Dr Philipp Lottholz.
