Javier Merchán, early career scholar at Comillas University, represented the EUPeace Alliance in the European Youth Week’s 2024 kick-off event, which took place in the European Parliament on the 12th of April. The event gathered a diverse mix of young people, European politicians and Commissioners, researchers, and policymakers in the field of youth. After an initial plenary session which included the participation of Roberta Metsola (president of the European Parliament), Margaritis Schinas (vice-president of the Commission) and Iliana Ivanova (Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth), participants engaged in insightful discussions about democratic participation, environment and climate, education and training, or employment and social inclusion, among others, across 33 parallel breakout sessions.

As the EUPeace Alliance representative, Javier Merchán took active part in the session “University engagement for European elections 2024 and beyond”, which was organised by the Youth Outreach Unit of the European Parliament. During this session, university representatives discussed best practices and common challenges, the role of the European Parliament in supporting a university network to work together for European democracy and European elections in 2024 and beyond, as well as the role of educational institutions in fostering democratic engagement, promoting participation in European elections, and building promotional resources to raise student’s awareness.
