18.04.2024 EUPeace Statement on European Elections 2024

The 2024 elections to the European Parliament are of utmost importance for the future of democracy and human rights in the European Union. As European University for Peace, Justice and Inclusive Societies, EUPeace, we call upon all EU-citizens to exercise their democratic rights and participate actively in shaping our shared future. Only through our joint engagement and dedication to democratic values we can build inclusive societies and work towards a Europe committed to peace and united in diversity.

This year’s elections will take place in turbulent times. Severe international conflicts and wars, societal polarisation, populism and the growing distrust in science as well as in the persuasive power of reason and dialogue are matters of serious concern. As an Alliance of universities with the fundamental mission of providing tomorrow’s citizens with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to cultivate peace, justice, and inclusive societies, we stand up for the universality of human dignity and rights. Respect for the diversity of customs, viewpoints, lived experiences, societal approaches, and ways of life is paramount. It is through democratic processes that we empower individuals and ensure that the voices of all citizens are heard and respected.

As we approach the European Elections on 6-9 June, we encourage all members of our institutions to engage in this democratic process, and to advocate for respectful and constructive discourse among candidates, political parties, and voters. Democracy and dialogue are at the heart of the European Union, they are the cornerstones of our societies and the basis of peace, justice and inclusion.
