13.05.2025 Renowned expert Dr Thania Paffenholz to discuss Europe's role in peace processes in public lecture at Marburg University

Dr Thania Paffenholz, a leading expert in inclusive peace processes, will deliver a critical lecture on Europe’s role in peacebuilding on 20 May 2025 at Marburg University. The event, part of the Europe Month 2025 celebrations and the activities of the EUPeace Alliance, will offer attendees a unique opportunity to hear from a renowned figure who has advised key international organisations, governments, and NGOs on peacebuilding strategies worldwide.
Paffenholz's extensive experience includes work with the United Nations, the World Bank, and the European Union, providing her with a deep understanding of the complexities surrounding peace processes. In her lecture, titled “Critical Reflection on the Role of Europe in Peace Processes,” Paffenholz will explore the European Union’s evolving role in peacebuilding efforts, reflecting on the challenges it faces in promoting sustainable peace in various regions. Her insights come at a time when the EU’s peacebuilding strategies are under increasing scrutiny for their effectiveness.
The event will be moderated by Prof Dr Thorsten Bonacker from Marburg University's Center for Conflict Studies and will include a discussion on the need for more inclusive and effective peacebuilding initiatives.
The lecture is especially aimed at students, including those from the EUPeace network, and encourages active participation in the critical discourse on Europe’s role in global peace processes. We also warmly invite students, scholars, and practitioners to join us for what promises to be an insightful and stimulating exchange.
The event will take place in hybrid format and is open to all interested participants.
