Marburg University and the University of Calabria deepen strategic partnership within EUPeace

At Marburg University, a high-level delegation from the University of Calabria advanced the EUPeace alliance through dynamic discussions that quickly led to concrete joint research and teaching initiatives. The visit reinforced EUPeace as a driving force for strategic cooperation and opened new pathways for future academic collaboration.

Delegation visit brings new momentum for joint research, teaching, and international networking

For two days, expert and strategic discussions with a high-level delegation from the University of Calabria took center stage at Marburg University. Led by Deputy President Prof Evelyn Korn – who is also Chair of the Governing Board of EUPeace – together with Marburg’s Vice-President for Research, Prof Gert Bange, and Rector Prof Gianluigi Greco, the visit provided a key opportunity to advance forward-looking collaborations with direct involvement from university leadership and academic representatives.

“It is inspiring to see how personal exchange among researchers has elevated our long-standing, trusting cooperation to a new level. We began with shared EUPeace ideas and quickly moved into lively academic discussions. Within just a few hours, we identified synergies in various areas and formulated concrete joint research and teaching projects, making them tangible.”Evelyn Korn.

Focus on research collaborations and joint degree programs

Through direct exchanges with representatives from six departments in Marburg, the guests from Calabria gained deeper insights into the university’s research infrastructures. In subject-specific working discussions, concrete cooperation ideas were further developed, e.g., in materials science and gender studies. Topics discussed included the joint development of study programs, opening courses to students from partner universities, and jointly acquiring third-party funding. In addition, an exchange took place with Marburg’s EUPeace departmental delegates, focusing on the local integration of alliance structures at both universities.

Strengthening collaboration

The visit laid the groundwork for intensified cooperation while opening up new perspectives: alongside strengthening existing partnerships, new thematic areas were identified to expand the joint research and teaching portfolio within EUPeace. Both universities look forward to further developing these ideas together and to sustainably strengthening European cooperation within the alliance.

The visit also served to prepare further joint activities, particularly with regard to the EUPeace Conference 2026, which will be hosted by the University of Calabria in September 2026 this year and will focus on the topic “Global warming and its impact: Connections with emerging conflicts, migrations, and health issues.”
