“Within the scope of the EUPeace programme, I participated online (virtually) in courses offered by Justus Liebig University Giessen and successfully completed them. This experience gave me the opportunity to take part in an international academic environment without physical mobility.
Engaging with academics and students from different countries contributed to the development of my intercultural communication skills and allowed me to gain exposure to diverse academic perspectives. The teaching methods used in the courses enhanced my critical thinking, analytical skills, and active participation in academic discussions.

Stari Most, the stone beach next to the Neretva River, the Partisan Memorial, and the incredible nature around the city.

Learning the local language, feeling the vibrant atmosphere in the city, and meeting other Erasmus students (including those from the other university).

The few bicycles and many cars; for the first time, I actually enjoyed walking to university.

Get in touch with the French Institute for high-quality language courses, and try to talk to locals to learn about their view on their city.

What surprised you about your host country or university?
I was not surprised, but the hospitality and friendliness of every single person we have met during our stay was extraordinary and very welcoming.
Something interesting that you learned about the host country or institution?
Yes, they do. I was surprised when I learned in my business and economics class that institutions, even economic institutions, have historical memory and try to preserve it, directly or indirectly.

What did you enjoy most about your mobility experience?
What I enjoyed most was meeting new people and experiencing a different culture firsthand. I especially appreciated the hospitality and welcoming atmosphere. It gave me the opportunity not only to grow professionally, but also to exchange ideas, perspectives, and experiences with people from different backgrounds. Overall, it was both a valuable professional milestone and a deeply meaningful personal experience.
What surprised you about your host country or university?
What surprised me most was how warm and hospitable people were—I felt comfortable and included right from the start. I was also impressed by the friendly atmosphere at the university and how open everyone was to sharing ideas and learning about different cultures.

What was your favourite place during your mobility?
My favourite place was the school where I did my internship, because I felt very welcomed at every moment. Everyone, including the kids, was very nice to me and made the experience very valuable and memorable.
What did you enjoy most about your mobility experience?
What I enjoyed the most was the opportunity to learn about a different system, while also using my time there to get to know the culture and travel around.
What surprised you about your host country or university?
What surprised me the most were the cultural differences between my host country and my home country, and how these shape the character and personal attitudes of the people.
Any advice for future mobility students?
My advice would be to research everything you need to know about your destination in advance, to keep an open mind, and to understand that our differences make us stronger.

- The courses are interesting and you have a lot of free time to visit the city or do an activities like to go see a hockey game for example
- Plzen is well located, I had the opportunity to visit a lot of countries or city in Czech republic which is really cool and cheap
- In the university you have an organization called ESN UWB Pilsen which proposed a lot of activities or weekend to meet the other Erasmus students, have a buddy and discover the country and culture
Why did you choose to take a virtual course at a partner university?
When I first heard about the opportunity to attend online classes at partner universities, I knew right away that I had to seize this chance. I highly value international academic exchange and am always eager to build bonds beyond borders. For me, the question was never if I should participate, but simply which course to take.
Three reasons why other students should also do a virtual exchange?
Virtual exchange programs are an amazing opportunity to attend classes at another university without the commitment of a full semester abroad. During a typical Erasmus semester, you often have to find courses that closely match those at your home institution to ensure they are officially recognized later on. The VEEP program, however, offers a course catalogue that complements your regular curriculum. This allows you to intentionally pick specific courses that genuinely interest you, without the pressure of credit recognition, since there is no financial funding dependent on your course choices or completion. You can commit to that one seminar you really want to take with no strings attached. Overall, the VEEP program is easy to organize—meaning no “learning-agreement headaches” and no need to rent an apartment in a foreign country.
What was one unexpected or surprising thing you learned during your VEEP course?
I learned that online seminars can actually be fun! As a student who spent most of my Bachelor’s degree studying during the pandemic, I was somewhat tired of online courses. However, the VEEP program completely changed my perspective. I can now see the true benefits of remote education and digital cooperation—skills that are essential methods for us as young researchers.
What was your favourite place during your mobility?
My first flight was to Rome on my way to Calabria, and I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the capital. However, I also found Calabria incredibly beautiful due to its coastal location. In particular, I would highly recommend Tropea and Scilla to anyone visiting the region, as they are wonderful places to explore during a mobility experience.
What did you enjoy most about your mobility experience?
I especially enjoyed immersing myself in Italian culture. I found it fascinating that Italians use so many gestures in daily communication, and that their meanings can differ significantly from those in other countries. Of course, having the opportunity to collaborate with people from a different background and learning to understand each other throughout the process was also a deeply valuable and rewarding experience for me.
What surprised you about your host country or university?
What surprised me most was the unique architecture of the university. The main complex is very different from anything I had seen before; it is built along a bridge-like structure with cube-shaped buildings on both sides. Each department is located in one of these cubes, which are arranged sequentially across the campus. I was also deeply impressed by the display of flags from so many different nations in front of the university. It made me realize just how many international students there are at the University of Calabria, which I honestly had not expected to this extent.
Any advice for future mobility students?
I would strongly advise future students to learn some basic Italian before their departure, as English is not widely spoken in everyday situations. Knowing even simple Italian expressions can make daily interactions much easier and help you adapt and integrate more quickly.
What was your favourite place during your mobility?
Prague was my Prague was my favourite place, especially its historic streets, cultural atmosphere, and beautiful parks. I also really enjoyed spending time in Pilsen and experiencing the academic environment at the University of West Bohemia.

What surprised you about your host country or university?
I enjoyed meeting new people, experiencing a different academic environment, and conducting research related to my PhD. The opportunity to combine academic work with discovering Czech culture made the experience especially meaningful.

The town hall of Limoges. It’s an amazing and very impressive building!

I really enjoyed talking to so many students from different countries across Europe and learned a lot about what living abroad is actually like.
What surprised you about your host country or university?
A huge surprise was the difference between the French and German railway staff and how they acted during the heatwave. The French staff offered free cold water, fans, and much more to help passengers cope with the heat on the trains—which should really be standard on German trains, too.
Any advice for future mobility students?
Don’t hesitate if you have the opportunity to go abroad. It’s a great experience that benefits you in many ways, not just academically.

One of the things that impressed me the most about Marburg was that it is a university based city with a wonderful cultural structure. With its historical background and castles, every minute I felt like being in a Harry Potter movie. Also university’s wide range of facilities has a great impact on the development of the students who come here. My favorite part of Marburg University was the library; I can easily say it’s the largest and most beautiful library I’ve ever seen…This university is perfect for a student!

I absolutely adored Giessen during my stay, but Cochem—with its magical riverside charm, breathtaking castle, and historic streets—completely captured my heart and easily became my favourite place of all.
What did you enjoy most about your mobility experience?
Connecting with people from different backgrounds, discovering new places, and engaging in an international academic setup within EUPeace greatly expanded my horizons. Staying at the university guest house added a wonderful, cosy touch to the whole stay. It was a truly unforgettable and inspiring experience.

What surprised me most was the contrast between Germany’s lively, nature-integrated campus life, the beautifully preserved historic charm of towns like Cochem, the structured academic discipline, and the absolute strictness and inflexibility of their rules.
What was your favourite place during your mobility?
Limoges’ historic city centre, where I could experience the charm of a French university town and enjoy discovering the city alongside other participants.

Meeting students from different countries, exchanging perspectives, and learning together about European cooperation. The conference was a great opportunity to connect with people who share similar interests and experience university life beyond my own campus.

How much you can learn from informal conversations outside the official programme. Even a short mobility can broaden your perspective, challenge assumptions, and create connections beyond national borders.
Any advice for colleagues considering a mobility opportunity?
Be open, curious, and willing to step outside your comfort zone. Take part in activities beyond the official programme and talk to as many people as possible. Sometimes a few days are enough to gain new perspectives and build meaningful connections.
Being part of EUPeace has been an incredible and eye-opening experience, where I have had the privilege of meeting truly inspiring individuals, gaining invaluable experiences, and witnessing how students’ voices are not only heard but actively shape the future of the EUPeace Alliance.

My favorite memory from the virtual exchange was the chance to meet inspiring and friendly people from different countries. It reminded me so much of my Erasmus days – the excitement of learning about other cultures, sharing experiences, and connecting with open-minded people. Even though it was online, it truly brought back that unique international atmosphere and made me feel part of a diverse community once again.

What did you enjoy most about your mobility experience?
What I enjoyed most about my mobility experience was exploring the city, meeting new people, and building meaningful connections. I truly appreciated the peaceful environment, as well as the opportunity to take some time for myself and focus on my research. I also enjoyed collaborating with fellow PhD students working on similar topics; we were able to exchange ideas, share experiences, and discuss current academic challenges. Overall, the experience broadened my perspectives, both personally and academically.
What surprised you about your host country or university?
What surprised me most about Germany was, honestly, the lack of air conditioning in many places—especially during warmer days! I was also occasionally caught off guard by train delays, though I quickly learned to accept them as part of the authentic German experience. Regarding the university, I was particularly intrigued by the distinct status and role of PhD students within the German academic system compared to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It gave me a much clearer insight into how academic and research career paths differ between the two countries. Apart from these small surprises, everything was wonderful. In fact, the entire journey deepened my appreciation and affection for Germany even more.

Be open-minded, step out of your comfort zone, and enjoy every moment! Make new friends, explore the culture, and don’t be afraid to try new things. You’ll create unforgettable memories!
