Voices on Walls – Street Art for Peace, Justice and Inclusive Societies
Voices on Walls is a student-organized event at the University of Marburg that combines reflection and creativity around the values of peace, justice, and inclusive societies. The event focuses on Street Art as a form of social expression and public dialogue, exploring how urban art can visualize social issues and shared values.
The event will be structured in two parts: a theoretical input session (hybrid, open for online participation) and a practical workshop. The first part will include short talks or presentations that introduce Street Art from different perspectives – artistic, cultural, or social – and may also include a moderated discussion or similar format. We are in contact with the faculty of arts at the University of West Bohemia Pilsen in the Czech Republic to have a theoretical input from an international standpoint. The exact format of the theoretical part will be defined later, depending on available speakers and collaborations.
In the practical part, participants will work together with a local artist to create their own Street Art piece on temporary panels or other surfaces. We are working together with an artist who is a student at the faculty of arts, music and media at the University of Marburg and who has taught spray workshops before several times.
The event will be open for approximately 15 people and we will provide all the needed materials, such as the spray cans. The practical part will last around 3-4 hours and will include snacks and drinks.
There is an open legal wall for sprayers in Marburg where we will be able to do the practical part and where other people will be able to view the art. The artist is going to draw a rough sketch of the art beforehand which will include symbols and other elements connected to the alliances goals but the participants are also welcome to contribute their own ideas.
The workshop aims to give participants the opportunity to experiment with techniques such as stencils, spray paint, and collage while reflecting on the event’s themes. All artworks can be shared online under the common hashtag #VoicesOnWalls, making the results visible beyond the physical event. The event is open to students from all disciplines, as well as interested members of the local community.
