Summary
“Wandelkarte 2.0” is a participatory project developed at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) within the EUPeace Living Peace Lab. It addresses the challenge of making sustainable, fair and healthy food options more visible and easier to access at the local level, while enabling more transparent and informed consumer choices.
Building on an existing sustainability map of the city of Giessen, the project develops a digital, user-friendly platform that combines information with opportunities for participation. A key outcome is the creation of a scientifically grounded set of criteria to assess food-related businesses and initiatives based on sustainability, social fairness and health aspects. This provides a structured and transparent basis for evaluating local food offers.
The project brings together researchers, students and local stakeholders, including the Fairtrade Town Giessen network. Through this collaboration, academic expertise in nutrition, sustainability and business is directly linked to real-world challenges, resulting in practical and locally relevant solutions.
Following the Living Lab approach, the platform is developed through an iterative and participatory process involving local businesses, initiatives and residents. Continuous testing and feedback ensure that the tool responds to everyday needs and remains accessible and useful in practice.
By increasing transparency, supporting sustainable consumption and strengthening local networks, “Wandelkarte 2.0” contributes to the EUPeace mission of promoting justice, participation and inclusive societies. At the same time, it offers a transferable model for how digital tools can support more sustainable and socially responsible local food systems.
