EUPeace has opened its call for papers for the third EUPeace Teaching Europe Conference, which will be held at the University of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 16–17 November 2026. Under the theme “Sustainable Futures”, the conference invites educators, researchers and students at all career stages to submit proposals by 20 September 2026.
The primary focus of this conference is not on questions of sustainability as understood from a strictly scientific perspective, but rather on theories and methodologies of communication and education: how do experts communicate and impart their academic and scientific findings in ways that are both scientifically sound and accessible to non-experts?
Effective and broad-based sustainability education — at primary, secondary and tertiary levels and beyond — has never been more important. It is one of the most vital means we have ot equipping our citizens with the ability and confidence properly to navigate the interconnected challenges of peace, justice, ecological coexistence, and sustainable development in its myriad dimensions. Our sustainable futures depend on it.
A focus on how we teach sustainability
Rather than examining sustainability from a strictly scientific standpoint, the conference centres on the theories and methods behind communication and education. Its guiding question is how experts can share academic and scientific findings in ways that are both rigorous and accessible to non-specialists. By exploring both what we teach about sustainability and how we teach it, the event aims to strengthen the way schools and universities equip citizens to navigate challenges of peace, justice, ecological coexistence and sustainable development.
Connecting disciplines and levels of education
Proposals are welcome across a wide range of themes, from climate science, biodiversity and renewable energy to the circular economy, green entrepreneurship, sustainable design and the many facets of social sustainability, including peacebuilding, human rights and intercultural dialogue. Contributions on embedding the Sustainable Development Goals within higher education and on community engagement are also encouraged. By bringing together researchers from every field and teachers from every level of education, the conference works towards a shared goal: the co-construction of a Blueprint for Teaching a Sustainable Europe.
A special invitation to students
For the first time, the call is extended not only to researchers and teachers but also to undergraduate and graduate students. Students are warmly encouraged to submit a talk or poster, whether reflecting on effective ways they have seen sustainability taught, sharing takeaways from an EUPeace project such as a Student Challenge or summer school, or presenting their own ideas for integrating sustainability into education.
How to take part
The programme will feature keynote lectures, panel discussions, round-tables and a poster session. Abstracts of 300–500 words, with up to five keywords and five references, can be submitted through the conference form, indicating a preferred format. Notification of acceptance will follow on 1 October 2026, and organisers plan to publish conference proceedings after the event.
Submissions can be made via the conference call for papers page. For any questions, contact eupeacetsa@unilim.fr.
