(A)Imagining Europe. Using generative intelligence for intercultural exchange among Teacher Students

Summary

What does ‘Europe’ mean and what might it mean in the future? The European landscape is characterized by diverse cultures, languages, and perspectives. However, these differences can often lead to misunderstandings and divisions, rather than fostering a sense of unity and shared identity. Our project directly addresses these challenges by harnessing the potential of generative AI to create collaborative, interactive, and dynamic learning opportunities for teacher education.

Narratives and ideas about Europe – imaginaries – are the productive starting point of the project. The aim of the project is to develop didactic arrangements in which forms of generative AI are used to promote intercultural exchange between (teacher-)students from different European universities. Active storytelling about and developing images of Europe is the central mode of learning and a contribution to a more inclusive society. We aim to transform the way future educators perceive and engage with the concept of Europe, thereby contributing to a more inclusive understanding of European identity.

The didactic arrangements will be developed in collaboration between the project leaders and students from the universities in Giessen, Marburg, Mostar and Comillas/Madrid in the context of a summer school.

This project is made possible through seed funding from the EUPeace Fund, an initial incentive launched to cultivate and develop interest across EUPeace communities in our network; by providing a first format for collaboration, the Fund equips participating researchers, educators, students and administrators with a practical tool for experimentation and active participation, employing a bottom-up approach that generates concrete information on the interests and needs of our communities and informs future collaborative initiatives.
