Developing Study programs and Co-Teaching in Economics of Global Risk, Finance & Insurance, and Global Economy & European Integration

Summary

Our project aims to develop Joint Degree Programs (Double/Multiple Degree) within the study programs Economics of Global Risk (JLU), Finance & Insurance (UNICAL), and Global Economy & European Integration (UNSA), in the context of the EUPeace Alliance.
In addition, the project seeks to foster international co-teaching and academic collaboration between Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), the University of Calabria (UNICAL), and the University of Sarajevo (UNSA), with a view to developing joint teaching formats and strengthening long-term partnerships within the Alliance. While the primary focus lies on program development, co-teaching initiatives will serve as a complementary instrument to enhance curricular coherence and institutional collaboration.

The project is structured around three progressive phases over a 12-month period:

Phase 1 focuses on conceptualization and partnership building. This includes a virtual kick-off meeting to align expectations, define shared goals, and identify complementary institutional strengths, as well as to map existing teaching portfolios and research foci across the three institutions.

Phase 2 centers on curriculum development and academic alignment. Through collaborative workshops and working groups—hosted in Gießen, Rende, or Sarajevo—partners will co-develop a modular, interdisciplinary structure integrating economic theory with risk analysis, governance, and policy.
Key issues such as credit transfer, mobility pathways, assessment formats, and recognition procedures will be addressed to ensure a coherent and seamless learning experience across institutions. Within this phase, bilateral workshops will focus on aligning two programs at a time, complemented by one joint workshop exploring potential synergies across all three programs. In parallel, this phase will include exploratory activities related to co-teaching, such as identifying suitable course pairings and developing pilot ideas for joint seminars, hybrid modules, or guest lectures.

Phase 3 will formalize the resulting Degree Programs through appropriate legal and administrative frameworks. This includes drafting a joint governance model, agreeing on admission criteria, and clarifying institutional responsibilities. In the final stage, cooperation agreements will be signed (for example, a JLU–UNICAL agreement combining Economics of Global Risk and Finance & Insurance, and a JLU–UNSA agreement linking Economics of Global Risk with Global Economy & European Integration).

Building on these outcomes, the partners will also establish a framework for implementing selected co-teaching modules, laying the groundwork for sustained academic cooperation and future joint initiatives.By combining the development of joint degree programs with practical co-teaching experiences, the project will contribute to the Flagship Actions of the EUPeace Alliance, strengthening curricular integration, promoting mobility, and advancing a shared European learning experience.
