This project aims to address the need for a Master’s program that equips future European decision-makers with expertise in Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS), in line with EU Peace’s goal of establishing flagship Joint Degrees (JDs). PREPACS is designed as a foundation for a robust JD in PACS, offering an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to peace-oriented education at both the European and global levels. The program aims to integrate one of the following themes: international security, human rights, migration, climate change and sustainable development, reflecting the multifaceted nature of contemporary conflict resolution and peacebuilding challenges.
The development process is structured into four progressive phases over
12 months. Phase 1 focuses on building a collaborative network among partner universities, assessing curricular strengths, and designing an initial program structure. Phase 2 consolidates institutional support, engages stakeholders, and evaluates student interest and market gaps. In Phase 3, the curriculum is refined with attention to academic and financial considerations, culminating in a formal review by the Education Board. Phase 4 finalizes institutional commitments through a Memorandum of Understanding and sets forth a roadmap for implementation.
By the end of the first year, PREPACS will deliver a comprehensive plan for the JD in PACS, approved by key stakeholders, laying the groundwork for future program development.
The EU Peace Universities in Marburg, Madrid, Sarajevo and Adana are working together on the project. It is possible that the PREPACS network will be extended.
This project is made possible through seed funding from the EUPeace Fund, an initial incentive launched to cultivate and develop interest across EUPeace communities in our network; by providing a first format for collaboration, the Fund equips participating researchers, educators, students and administrators with a practical tool for experimentation and active participation, employing a bottom-up approach that generates concrete information on the interests and needs of our communities and informs future collaborative initiatives.
