A new study on youth experiences and the prevention of violence in Bosnia and Herzegovina was published by the University of Sarajevo in March 2026. Developed as part of the “Developing Peer Education Initiatives” Living Lab at University of Sarajevo, the publication explores challenges and perspectives in creating safe and inclusive environments, with particular attention to gender-based violence.
Understanding youth experiences of violence
The study addresses the vulnerability of young people, who are navigating identity for-mation while facing social pressures that can exceed their capacities. It highlights how violence—especially gender-based violence—continues to pose a significant barrier to young people’s safety, education and personal development, with long-term consequenc-es for individuals and communities.
Peer education as a prevention tool
The project emphasises peer education as an effective approach to violence prevention. By involving young people as active participants rather than passive recipients, the initia-tive enabled them to contribute to identifying risks and shaping responses. This approach supports more relevant and accessible discussions on violence and gender equality, grounded in the lived experiences of young people.
Collaboration for inclusive solutions
The project was implemented in cooperation with the CURE Foundation and the Agency for Gender Equality of Bosnia and Herzegovina, reflecting the EUPeace Alliance’s com-mitment to linking academic work with societal actors. Researchers from the University of Sarajevo, including staff from the Faculties of Law and Philosophy, worked alongside stu-dents from various disciplines, who contributed to both research activities and the devel-opment of educational tools.
Outcomes and access to the study
The main outcome of the project is a publication titled Study on the Experience and Pre-vention of Violence among Youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It highlights the importance of youth participation in decision-making processes and offers insights into the causes and prevention of violence.
