Moving Together: EUPeace Publishes Its Mobility Strategy

EUPeace has published its Mobility Strategy, a shared framework for making international experience accessible to more students and staff across its nine partner universities. From semester exchanges and virtual courses to staff weeks, it sets out how mobility across the Alliance will become simpler, more inclusive and better connected.

With around 200,000 students across nine partner universities, EUPeace brings together a large and diverse academic community. Its Mobility Strategy, published in October 2026, sets out how more student, and more staff, can gain international experience across the Alliance, whether in person, online or in a combination of both.

The strategy was developed jointly by mobility experts from across the Alliance, including at a dedicated workshop at the University of Sarajevo and the University of Mostar in March 2026. It combines a shared vision, concrete actions and commitments by the partner universities.

“The EUPeace Mobility Strategy demonstrates that the EUPeace partners understand the importance of offering different kinds of mobilities to the universities’ diverse target groups. When it comes to mobility, in the years to come EUPeace will continue to build on already successful mobility formats but also explore exciting new ideas!” Alina Blokker, Lead of the Mobility Strategy Development and Implementation.

One Alliance, many ways to be mobile

Not every student can spend a semester abroad. The strategy therefore builds on a range of mobility formats that complement each other:

  • Semester exchanges remain the core format, supported by a growing number of exchange agreements between partner universities.
  • VEEP, the Virtual European Exchange Programme, lets students take online courses at other partner universities and earn ECTS, before, during or instead of a stay abroad.
  • Blended Intensive Programmes, short-term mobilities and doctoral stays offer further entry points.

The European Track connects many of these options, allowing students to collect credits from different EUPeace learning opportunities towards a certificate.

For staff, teaching and training exchanges, the annual Staff Weeks and new formats such as EduTandems, which pair teaching staff for collaborative exchanges, strengthen cooperation across the Alliance.

Inclusive and sustainable by design

A central principle of the strategy is “inclusion by design”: rather than adapting offers afterwards, mobility opportunities should be accessible and flexible from the start, taking into account barriers such as financial constraints, caregiving or work responsibilities, health conditions or limited awareness of the opportunities available. Virtual and blended formats play a key role here, as they open international learning to people who cannot travel for longer periods.

The strategy also encourages low-emission travel options and will make guidance on sustainable mobility and on inclusive support services available through the EUPeace Mobility Portal.

From strategy to action

An action plan with 20 concrete measures translates the strategy into practice. Steps planned for the coming year include:

  • building on existing communication efforts through regular social media content showcasing mobility experiences; strengthening the Mobility Portal with clearer information on staff mobility requirements, deadlines, accessibility support services and sustainable travel options,
  • improving access to mobility opportunities by centralising information on support services, evaluating existing BIPs and developing more coordinated frameworks for short-term mobility,
  • developing a joint grade conversion table to facilitate the recognition of academic achievements, collecting student feedback through regular focus groups, and sharing good practices across partner universities,
  • facilitating staff exchanges through the EduTandem programme, developing a guide for organising Staff Weeks, strengthening institutional agreements, and supporting dedicated KA171 applications for exchanges with the University of Sarajevo and the University of Mostar.

In the longer term, the Alliance aims to connect virtual mobility, physical exchange and follow-up activities into continuous learning journeys.
