Researching global challenges across disciplines
Global Studies is an emerging interdisciplinary field that seeks to understand how global developments shape societies, institutions and everyday lives. The programme brings together perspectives from across the social sciences to examine questions such as conflict, migration, human rights, sustainability, political economy, culture, gender, religion and development. Its aim is to equip doctoral researchers to work independently, to lead interdisciplinary research projects, and to conduct research to high scientific, methodological and ethical standards. Graduates are prepared for academic careers as well as for roles in public administration and civil society.
The programme at a glance
The programme runs over three years (six semesters) and carries 180 ECTS credits at EQF level 8, leading to the degree of Doctor of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences. Teaching is in English and takes place at CIS in Sarajevo, complemented by occasional online lectures from guest professors at international universities. This combination allows doctoral candidates to work within an international academic environment while developing research that is closely connected to the realities of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region.
From first cohort to first doctorates
Since its first generation enrolled, the programme has grown into an established research community, and the first doctoral dissertations have now been publicly defended at CIS. Their topics illustrate the breadth of the field: from the quality of services in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s higher education system, assessed with the SERVQUAL model, to the socio-ecological limits to growth and the role of the commons in a circular city model. Reflecting on his experience, first-generation doctoral candidate Adnan Ovčina says: “I selected the Global Studies Doctoral Program because it is the only interdisciplinary program of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The program has exceeded my expectations, and I am extremely pleased with my decision to pursue my PhD studies in Global Studies.”

A contribution to just and connected societies
With its focus on conflict, human rights, migration and sustainability, the programme speaks directly to EUPeace’s commitment to peace, justice and inclusive societies. As a programme taught in English, it may also be of interest to researchers from across EUPeace partner universities and beyond who wish to pursue doctoral research on global questions from a South-East European vantage point.
How to apply
