About the Training Week

What happens when peace, justice and inclusion become questions we teach with, and not merely topics we teach about? Towards the end of an extraordinarily turbulent decade, how can we meaningfully discuss both the concepts themselves and their political, social and cultural realities? How might these concepts, as active principles, reshape a classroom discussion, a laboratory project or even an engineering challenge? And what do pedagogies oriented towards these principles look like in the age of AI?

The EUPeace Teaching Staff Academy Training Week 2027 invites teaching staff from across the Alliance to explore these questions through hands-on workshops, experimentation and exchange.

We want to move beyond statements of principle to the choices that shape everyday teaching: the problems we ask students to solve, the perspectives we bring into the classroom, the learning environments we create, and the ways we assess achievement. Work with teaching colleagues from across EUPeace to test new approaches, question familiar practices, and develop tasks and ideas you can use in your own teaching.

Topics

Contributions may address, but are by no means limited to, the following topics:

  • Teaching peace, justice and inclusion: What does it mean to teach and discuss these concepts in contemporary higher education, and how do pedagogical approaches change in virtual and hybrid classrooms?
  • Collaboration across borders: How can co-teaching, virtual exchange and interdisciplinary learning help students engage critically with perspectives beyond their own?
  • Linking primary, secondary and tertiary education: How do we approach peace, justice and inclusive societies in classrooms of very different ages and stages?
  • Values in unexpected places: What does critical engagement with these values look like in a mathematics classroom, an engineering design brief or a science laboratory?
  • AI, judgement and responsibility: How can we help students to critically interrogate bias, authorship and authority, and to make informed ethical choices in an AI-shaped world?
  • Lifelong learning: How can we develop micro-credentials and lifelong learning offers focused on the core values of our Alliance?
  • Community learning: How can challenge- and work-based projects, service learning and collaboration with partners beyond the university connect academic learning with questions of social justice and civic participation?
  • Inclusion by design: How might we rethink participation, course materials and assessment to remove barriers to learning while maintaining academic challenge?

We welcome unexpected connections and approaches that open up new possibilities for teaching peace, justice and inclusive societies, both within and beyond our Alliance.

Contribute a Workshop: Let Colleagues Try Out Your Approach

Do you have a teaching practice others could adapt? A classroom dilemma worth investigating together? An emerging idea that would benefit from colleagues’ perspectives? Then we warmly invite you to submit a workshop proposal. Your workshop might invite participants to:

  • work through a simulation or ethical dilemma and discuss its teaching potential;
  • (re-)design a learning activity or assessment around a question of peace, justice or inclusion;
  • test a creative or participatory teaching method, digital or not;
  • explore a classroom case where different values collide or inclusion proves difficult;
  • co-design a cross-disciplinary or international learning activity.

Established approaches and work in progress are equally welcome, but we strongly encourage interactive and practical formats. Workshops last around 1.5 hours and can be led by one person or by two to three colleagues, from the same or different EUPeace partner universities.

A central workshop will draw on good practice from the cross-Alliance virtual course “Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Peace, Justice, and Inclusive Societies”.

Participate, Experiment and Connect

You don’t need to lead a workshop to take part. We also invite teaching colleagues, and those preparing to teach, to join as trainees. Over five days in Giessen, participants will exchange experiences, try out methods and work together on teaching ideas. You will leave with approaches you can adapt, fresh perspectives on your own practice, and colleagues with whom you can continue developing your ideas.

Who Can Apply?

  • Teaching staff from all disciplines and career stages at the nine EUPeace partner universities, including doctoral and postdoctoral staff involved in teaching
  • Staff who support innovative teaching practice, for example in university centres for teaching and learning
  • Policymakers and institutional leaders in higher education
