In an international context marked by growing rivalry between powers, geopolitical uncertainty and rapid technological change, Comillas Pontifical University presents METIS: Journal of Strategic Autonomy and International Studies, a new open access scientific journal focused on the analysis of major global challenges.
Promoted by the Department of International Relations of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, METIS is born with the aim of becoming a reference space for the study of strategic autonomy and its impact on the contemporary international order.
An innovative approach: strategic autonomy
The concept of strategic autonomy is central to the journal’s editorial line. It is understood as the ability of states and other international actors to make decisions and act independently in key areas such as politics, defence, economics and technology.
The very name of the journal METIS, the Greek term for practical intelligence, astuteness and strategic capacity, reflects this analytical vocation: to provide rigorous tools for understanding an increasingly complex international environment.
An interdisciplinary and open journal
METIS is open to contributions from a variety of disciplines, including:
– International Relations Theory
– International security and strategic studies
– Area studies
– Regional integration and international organisations
– Cooperation and development
– Political Science, Political Theory and Comparative Politics
– History of International Relations
The journal pays special attention to works that analyse the interaction between the internal dynamics of states and transformations in the international system.
Academic rigour and international vocation
All articles published in METIS undergo a process of external peer review, guaranteeing their scientific quality, originality and academic relevance.
Published every six months and with an international vocation, the journal is open to authors from different countries and academic traditions, encouraging the exchange of perspectives in the analysis of global phenomena.
Furthermore, as an open access journal, METIS facilitates the dissemination of knowledge without barriers, contributing to broadening the impact of research in international relations.
A bridge between academia and public policy
Beyond the strictly academic realm, METIS aims to connect research with public policy debates and professional practice. The journal aims to be useful for researchers, institutional decision-makers and analysts interested in understanding changes in the international order.
Call for papers for the first issue
The journal has now opened its call for papers. The editorial guidelines and the submission process can be consulted on the official web page: https://revistas.comillas.edu/metis/es/about

The launch of METIS is part of the Comillas Pontifical University’s commitment to strengthen its research activity and consolidate its position in the field of international relations and strategic studies.
