On Wednesday, 3 June 2026, at 6.30 pm (CEST), Swedish author Daniel Pedersen will present his book Night and Ashes: Literatures of the Holocaust at Justus Liebig University Giessen. The hybrid event will take place in the JLU Office and Seminar Building, Room 003, Rathenaustraße 10, 35394 Giessen, and can also be followed online.
Literature and remembrance
Pedersen’s book, Natt och aska. Förintelsens litteraturer, was published in Sweden in 2025 and has so far only appeared in Swedish. It explores a wide range of literary voices engaging with the Holocaust, including eyewitness accounts, diaries, poems and novels. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with Dr Charlotte Kitzinger from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at JLU Giessen.
A dialogue on memory, responsibility and democracy
The event will address how literature can create spaces for reflection, empathy and responsibility at a time when historical memory, democratic values and human rights are under pressure. As an EUPeace Bridge Dialogue, it connects literary perspectives with wider questions of peace, remembrance and democratic coexistence.
Join the event in Giessen or online
The event will be held in English and is open to students, educators and members of the interested public. Further information are available via the JLU event page.
